One of the hardest aspects that people have trouble with when it comes to decorating their family room is arranging the furniture to maximize the potential of the room. When arranging the furniture you want it to seem natural and comfortable while highlighting the room. Here are 5 tips for arranging the furniture in your family room.
1. Consider the Location of the Doorways
Some family rooms will only have one doorway while others may have two. When arranging your furniture take care to keep the locations of the doorways in mind; this ensures that the room flows well. If you have two doorways into the living room consider placing the furniture so that people don't cross the "conversational area" as they work through the room if they need to access both doors. If you have one doorway be sure that people can easily access the furniture without having to walk all the way around the room to sit down.
2. Take into Consideration the Walls
If you have a long wall in the family room you may choose that wall as the area to place your major piece of furniture, like a big sofa. You can also choose that wall as the focal point and place an entertainment center on the wall. Base your other furniture off this wall for the arrangement in the room.
3. Leave Plenty of Space In Between the Furniture Pieces
When arranging your furniture in the family room be sure that there is plenty of walking space in between the pieces. People should have a comfortable amount of space to walk but should not be too far away so that the space isn't intimate anymore. No one wants to be bumping into the furniture when walking around but you also don't want to have to shout to talk to another person in the room.
4. Make Sure the Furniture Balances Properly
If you have all your large pieces of furniture on the same side of the room, the space is going to look completely off balance. You don't want a large sofa next to a large recliner and then a small chair and side table on the other side of the room. Be sure that you mix your larger and smaller pieces so that the look of the room is balanced both horizontally and vertically.
5. The Furniture Arrangement should be Functional
The most important thing to remembering about arranging the furniture in the family room is that it needs to be functional. A family room is usually more casual, sort of a hangout room, so you need to be sure it serves its purpose. If you have a television in this room it may be a good idea to make sure that at least some of the seating faces the television especially if your family likes to watch movies in there together. You can have the most stylish family room ever but if it is not functional it is completely wasted.
Arranging the furniture in your living room should not be a challenge if you follow these tips. You can have a stylish yet comfortable and functional family room.
