If you have one doorway be sure that people can easily access the furniture without having to walk all the way around the room to sit down.

If you have a long wall in the family room you may choose that wall as the area to place your major piece of furniture, like a big sofa. You can also choose that wall as the focal point and place an entertainment center on the wall. Base your other furniture off this wall for the arrangement in the room.

People should have a comfortable amount of space to walk but should not be too far away so that the space isn't intimate anymore. A family room is usually more casual, sort of a hangout room, so you need to be sure it serves its purpose. If you have a television in this room it may be a good idea to make sure that at least some of the seating faces the television especially if your family likes to watch movies in there together. You can have the most stylish family room ever but if it is not functional it is completely wasted.
