Furniture - How To Organize It

Once you have purchased your furniture, you need to start thinking about how to position the pieces. Here is a quick guide on different strategies on how to organize furniture.

Once you've finally picked out the furniture you want and have it delivered, you are stuck with the task of trying to arrange it in the most pleasing way possible. Arranging furniture can be tricky, but with a little bit of planning you can set up your living space to be functional and stylish. Here is how to arrange furniture in your home.

If you are purchasing new furniture, it is a good idea to consider how you would want to arrange your furniture before you even hit the stores. Take good measurements of each of the rooms you are planning to furnish. When you go to pick out your furniture, take these measurements with you so that you can have a better understanding of how much room the furniture will take up.

After your furniture has arrived, there are two main ways to arrange it. First, you can make a drawing of your room on graph paper, setting it to scale. Make paper cut outs of each piece of furniture, making sure they are also done to scale. Manipulate your furniture on the drawing in order to see how each piece is able to fit the best. Although this method typically allows you to get a precise look at how your furniture is going to appear once placed in the room, some people find it too time consuming. The other way of arranging your furniture is simply to place it in the room, and continue moving it until it looks the way you want. Of course, this involves a lot more manual labor and if your furniture pieces are large or heavy, this is a lot easier said than done.

No matter which way you decide to arrange your furniture, there are few things to keep in mind. First, you should try to have symmetry in your design. If you have tall lamps or other high pieces, you'll want to make sure that they are present in both sides of the room. If you have a piece that really stands out, you'll either want to place it as a focal point in the room, or if you would rather draw attention away from it, place it over to the side. It is fine to mix and match furniture styles or colors. Just remember that less is often more when it comes to furniture. Too many pieces can cause a room to look cluttered.

There really is no right or wrong way to arrange furniture. Some people believe that the arrangement of furniture is important because it allows energy to flow throughout the room. If that is something you are interested in, there are books that teach you the art of feng shui. Otherwise, just focus on making the room functional and symmetrical and the rest will fall into place.

Bedroom Furniture Combines Beauty and Utility

Bedroom is the place where we relax at the end of every hectic day, so it needs to be cozy and comfortable. Therefore, bedroom furniture is to be chosen with care, speculation, and keeping an eye on aesthetic appeal of the room. Personal likings and sense of comfort is the ultimate aim to enjoy the luxury of bedroom and furniture should balance utility and beauty at one common platform. Bedroom furniture is more or less common; however, some inclusion and exclusion of certain items can take place depending on the size of the bedroom and on the discretion of the users.

A bedroom is, needless to mention, room for bed. Therefore, bed is the integral accessory. There are different types of bed available in market; according to the requirement and budget, one should purchase a bed for his/her bedroom. There are some designer beds also available in furniture showrooms, which are slightly expensive options for purchase. However, these look elegant and obviously add decor and gorgeousness to the bedroom-look and intensify the comfort level of the users. Those who have big sized bedroom or use master bedroom should think of keeping a blanket box in the bedroom. As bedroom furniture, blanket box provides good storage space for the room as well as it may add extra cleanliness in the look of the room decor.

Wardrobe is common furniture and the size and wood color should depend on the wall color, other upholstery, and fabrics used in the room. Right selection of wardrobe adds glamour and space look and combines comfort and utility at one point. Bedstead is another convenient purchase item in bedroom furniture category. A good bedstead is good showpiece for decor and can be the center of attraction for the viewers because of its exclusive design, style, beauty, and luxurious comfort. When a bedstead, integrated with modern design and catchy color, is used in a room it serves the purpose of appealing and giving your room a unique look.

There are multiple options to decorate. In some cases, it is available in a set package where multiple units are kept as a total unit for the entire bedroom decoration which covers the decoration as well as the utility of the users. Otherwise, one can decorate his/her bedroom by mix and match combination with different types made of different designs, materials, colors and range.

The last but not the least item of essential bedroom furniture is a mirror. Mirror serves different purposes such as it helps in dressing as well as it create an illusion of making the bedroom size bigger. However, the use of many mirrors may not be comfortable in its effect because sometimes it may spoil the privacy of this personal place. The size and shape of the mirror should be selected according to the wall size and shape to add design and decor to the room.

The decoration or arrangement of living room furniture thus varies from one house to another; however, the furniture arrangement remains same.

The Perfect Wall Arrangement For A Picture Frame

The assembly of a wall arrangement can sometimes be very daunting. There are so many different picture frames. You have an 8 x 10 picture frame, a classic picture frame and then you can throw in many different home accessories and maybe even a mirror. Yes, it can be very daunting.

This is just a tip or two that we have accomplished making beautiful wall arrangements with. We will take all the pictures in their picture frame and lay them on the floor at the base of the wall. If we have a home accessory or a mirror to add the arrangement we will also lay these on the floor near the picture frames. Seeing everything assembled by the wall will allow the color of the wall to be added to the mixture of the wall arrangement and the size of the wall is also taken into consideration. If you will assemble your picture frame, home accessory, quilt or mirror before hanging on the wall you will not need to fill extra holes because everything will be in their place before hanging. It is a wonderful trick.

I strongly believe that with the more unique, custom picture frames you add to the wall arrangement the depth and character of the wall arrangement will increase. The home accessory that will hang among the pictures also adds warmth and character. A home accessory can be anything to a custom decorative mirror to a saying framed in a beautiful picture frame, a sconce, a candle or even a beautiful wall quilt. Since our home is a country home décor we have a beautiful heart with our initial in the center, this is sculpted from barb wire and hangs from an antique yoke. It is a beautiful accessory on our wall that is full of framed family pictures.

If you add a piece of furniture to the base of the wall, we have a beautiful table made out of pine and glass to sit more family pictures on in front of this wall. At the base of the wall we have a wicker basket. A beautiful wall arrangement is made.

It is important to consider every picture frame, home accessory and mirror that will compliment your home décor, whether it be a county décor or a designer décor, so that you will be completely satisfied with your finished wall arrangement.

Silk Flower Arrangements - A Great Way To Spruce Up The Dining Room

Silk Flowers are a great way to make your dining room table look great all the time. I recently bought a beautiful silk tulip arrangement. The arrangement is 30" high and fills the center of the dining table perfectly.

The best part is most people think it is absolutely real. When I tell them it is a fake flower arrangement they don't believe me until they smell it. The arrangement is full of white French tulips in a glass vase with Faux water. The arrangement was nicely arranged out of the box. I simply unwrapped it and put it on the table.

Maintenance is simple, no watering. About once a week I use a feather duster on it. I read that I could also use compressed air if I am careful. This arrangement has added a lot of beauty to the room. I am thinking of getting a few more so I can change them around.

Quality silk arrangements are not cheap. This was just over $200 but I did shop around and found that cheaper versions look fake. That may be fine for a corner in an office but in a prominent place like a dining room, a high quality silk arrangement is the best option.

Lastly, I was pleased to find out that silk flowers are not made of silk. Most silk flowers are made of synthetics so they last longer and look more realistic. Add a touch of beauty to your dining area with low maintenance Silk Flower Arrangements.

The Number One Reason Everyone Should Use Flameless Candles

I can't explain it. I had wanted to make the morning special for my children before sending them off to school. I started by setting a nice table, complete with candles, napkin rings and a solid eggs and bacon breakfast. We all left the house at the same time, they jumped on the bus, I jumped in the car.

Within a mile or two of the house, I had this strong compulsion to turn around and go back home. I tried to brush off the urge, but nothing doing. I could not brush off this urgency so within 2 miles I had turned around and was heading back to the house - post haste!

I believe it was God's prodding that compelled me to turn around and I'm glad I listened. As I climbed out of the car, irritated at the strange inconvenience of it all, I heard my smoke alarm coming from the carport. I thought the battery to the alarm was dying but boy was I wrong? The table was ablaze!

By the time I ran to the bedroom and grabbed the favored quilt off the bed, the chairs were joining in on the flame party.

After extinguishing the flames by quilt suffocation and and a bucket brigade of one, the house was spared.

What caused the fire? Candles. I had forgotten to blow out my mood setting breakfast candles before leaving the house. They had burned down to the glass tray - the tray had cracked and the wax spread - igniting the table.

Today I only use flame less candles.

This may be the first time you have heard of flameless candles.

Flameless Candles are fire safe battery powered candles that have been created, using ingenious new technology to give them the look, feel and smell of the real thing.

These flameless candles have been designed to look and function like a real candle, that it will take a physical investigation to prove they are not the real thing. Now I burn to my hearts content, not worrying about combustible tables or forgotten hot wicks.

If there is a candle you like more times than not you can now find a flameless one similar to it. There are tapered, votive, round, square, molded, some even include timers to preserve battery life. Others are even submersible.

The safety value obvious based on my true story. I kept the charred table on the deck for years as a reminder of my carelessness and God's grace. That said, these candles have fantastic home design applications as well.

Use flameless candles for your seasonal arrangements. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the peak holidays where candle accents come out in full force.

So many flower arrangements and table center pieces incorporate the use of candles to celebrate a family gathering. Many of these arrangements include dry or silk flowers. By using flameless candles Not only will you avoid the risk of fire, but you will protect your furniture from dripping wax or blackend spots on walls.

You will no longer have to clean your glass sconce of smoke residue or messy and difficult to remove wax spots.

Use them for weddings, anniversaries, party decorations. The make wonderful gifts, especially for the college bound young lady who loves candles.

The remote control candles are really snazzy. Now you can display them in those hard to reach places above the front door or over the alcove or in any area of your home where it's just to difficult to light and extinguish.

They can be used indoors and out, rain or shine. Use them in wall scones and chandeliers. Eliminate the need for unsightly cords and rewiring when you want mood lighting.

Find a theme candle to use as a night light in your child's bedroom. There are a variety of solar candles that can be used out doors in the shape of Tiki torches, lanterns and sconces.

And for the more chic among us there are color changing candles great to use at cocktail parties and art gallery affairs.

The best part of all? They create the same beautifully subtle ambiance as their original wax counterparts.

Be prepared for the next holiday season by shopping for flameless candles today.

The only disadvantage of the flameless candles is that they require batteries to operate, but it's a small exchange for the fire proofing benefits received by eliminating the need for wax candles.

How To Quickly And Easily Create A Living Room Furniture Layout?

If you planning to buy new furniture for your living room, then most probably you have already thought about the furniture layout in your mind or else you have probably thought of repeating the same old layout with only the new furniture pieces. In this article I will show you a simple method to create the most efficient layout for your living room.

Before we begin there are a few points that need to be considered. A living room is always a transition space. This means that entrances to all other rooms are located in living room. Other bedrooms, dining room, kitchen etc. are accessed through living room, that's why a sufficient "circulation space" for family members is a must.

So here is what you can do to create the most efficient layout for a living room.

1) Take a plane white paper. A4 size is also enough.

2) Draw a sketch plan of your living room on this paper. While drawing this plan it is important to show the following things in it:

a) Entrance door

b) Entrance doors to other rooms

c) Window positions

d) Minor column projections (if any)

e) Swing of the doors (inside or outside the living room)

f) Presence of staircase

g) Fireplace (if any)

3) Take a pencil and draw lines starting from entrance door to all other doors and window positions. This is the natural travel lines for any person using the living room. If the room is empty without any furniture these are the lines any person would follow to reach other point in the living room.

4) Now start placing the furniture units like 3 seat sofa, single/double seat sofa, coffee table, end tables lampshades, bookshelves, TV unit, etc.. Depending upon your budget you can go for any number of these units.

While placing these units it will always be seen that the furniture obstructs the pencil travel lines drawn in the third step. But that's OK for now. Now make as may combinations and arrangements of the furniture units as possible. Think out of the box while doing this. Try to do something different.

Remember if you try you will easily come up with at lest 10 layout for that same living room. You will be amazed at how many combinations are possible. Also imagine the furniture pieces you already have or can you replace that table in the bedroom with the one in the living room.

How about keeping it vertical rather that horizontal in the plan. Whatever you do keep one thing in mind. Always keep the human movement "unobstructed". People passing through the living room in other rooms must be able to pass without cutting vision if you are talking to other person in the living room.

That's why those pencil lines have been drawn. After you have drawn the furniture pieces on the living room plan, modify the travel lines. Now these lines will be around the furniture, especially at corners. The travel lines will now take the shape of the furniture at the edges.

After this short exercise you will have probably 5 different layouts on paper with. Select the one in which you see the following points of interest.

a)Travel line lengths are shortest.

b)Travel lines do not pass trough the furniture.

Apart from the efficiency there is another factor called as visual balance while designing a furniture layout. Finally does it look good to YOU. Are you comfortable with the final layout. The visual balance is achieved by making the most use of all walls of the living room with decorating elements such as paintings, color schemes, etc.

So if you follow a system from the beginning you will be definitely be able to create a beautiful living room in the shortest possible time. I hope this article has helped you to find more creative ways of doing this job more efficiently.

A Romantic Centerpiece

Nothing is quite as romantic as candles, and when you make a centerpiece out of high quality white and off white candles, for some reason that spells one of the classiest ways to make a romantic centerpiece. With a candle holder for each candle you can create an eye dazzling effect by having short candle holders and tall candle holders, as well as varying the height of the candles. A candelabra or two with long tapered candles will also bring out the romance of your very special dinner for two.

Or you can make an arrangement of different sized pillar candles for a very romantic centerpiece. Perhaps you may wish to purchase floating candles and put them in a large glass bowls that float about and make the glass bowls sparkle as your lover's eyes will sparkle with such a romantic centerpiece.

Of course romance often calls for flowers, and so you can purchase a great number of tremendously romantic centerpieces, each more lovely than the next. Using real flowers as a romantic centerpiece allows you to use the scent of the flowers too for greater romanticism.

There are many romantic ceramic centerpieces such as a couple holding hands, or kissing. Paired with candlelight, you will find that this type of romantic centerpiece is hard to beat.

Because fondue is romantic by itself, consider making a fondue set your romantic centerpiece. The act of having each other taste something from the other's dipped fondue is extremely romantic, as is the candle that is lit beneath the fondue. Can you say strawberries dipped in chocolate?

Do not forget how romantic candles mixed with mirrors can be. By setting your candles on a large mirror or mirrored tray, and using that as your romantic centerpiece you'll get twice the romantic ambiance from those candles.

Candles that are featured among a floral nest also make quite a romantic statement. The wondrous fragrant aroma that flowers can bring will only heighten the sense of romanticism. Besides adding flowers lends an opulent touch to your table.

Consider too, having long stemmed flowers such as gladiolas on their side. The horizontal display will bring a romantic touch to your table that will be very difficult to enhance upon, while lending a very stylish look.

A birdcage, especially an ancient one, can make quite an elegant statement as a centerpiece. You can fill it with flowers, or even candles. Best yet, tuck in simulated lovebirds on the perch.

Living Room Chairs And Their Use In Decorating

Chairs provide a very simple yet effective way to relax and spend some good time in a comfortable body posture. But not all chairs are designed to "relax" . This is especially true about chairs in the
workplaces. In the workplaces we are supposed to be alert hence the office furniture is designed to be alert at work. They keep your body in a manner which will keep you from relaxing.

But things are different in a living room. the whole and sole purpose of chairs in the living room are to provide better comfort and maximum relaxation. But there is one more important aspect to this situation.

let's see a small experiment. If you have been given a choice in a living room to watch a good movie and provided with two different types of seating arrangement. First a big stuffed leather sofa and a small chair with fair amount of seating space a person should have, which one would you choose to sit. Of course most people will unconsciously choose to sit on a large sofa and ignore the chair altogether.

Why does this happen? It's simple a sofa has a much different psychological impact on the human mind because of its sheer volume and form. Because of his a chair in a living room is always considered as a "option" for seating arrangement. If your more friends join the movie viewing with you then you might consider getting a few "chairs" to sit around the TV and fulfill the need of emergency occupancy.

So chairs are always considered a fillers rather than core furniture elements in a living room. But this same principle can be very effectively used, let's see how.

If you observe the furniture arrangement in any living room you will notice that sofa sets are arranged in living rooms that overlook some object of interest such as a fireplace, TV, outdoor patio, backyard etc. So such kind of arrangement is used to create a focus in the living room. Go right now to images.google.com and search for "living room" images. View at least 10 images and you will see that all attention has been focused around this furniture arrangement.

We can easily use this method with chairs as well. An arrangement of chairs in a large living room will definitely be used to balance the attention elsewhere and create another focal point. For example if
the exit to patio has been overlooked an arrangement of even 4 chairs with a small coffee table will make the space look more used and balanced.

In this way chairs do have a lot of "power" in decorating when used in groups and with creative arrangements. I hope this article has shown you the importance of chairs as a design element in living rooms.

Bringing in Natural Elements

Your home can reflect natural elements by using a variety of materials to decorate it. By beginning with earth tones in the colors you choose and incorporating natural fibers for your upholstery, you will be on a greener course to your home décor. With nature in full bloom, your earth tones don't have to be dull, just look outside and see what colors are available.

Having just returned from a trip to Phoenix, I am reminded of the beauty of the surrounding desert. The chartreuse color of the palo verde trees in bloom against the blue skies was spectacular and the saguaros were in full bloom with white bouquets on their arms and crowning their tops, while the cactus wrens poked in and out of their nests. The sages were showing off their purple colors and ocotillos were looked like they were on fire with their flame blossoms lighting their tops.

With summer close at hand, now is a good time to bring out decorative items that remind you of great some great vacations; whether it is at the beach or mountains or desert. Consider a tall glass cylinder filled with a layer of sand and a candle and a few pretty shells collected while strolling along the beach; or fill the container with all shells, facing the prettiest ones around the outside edge where you can see and enjoy them.

Try using river rocks to fill the top of house plant containers; they will help keep the moisture in during our hot summers.

You can create an interesting still life with some succulent plants and a few pebbles or stones for a centerpiece or focal point on a favorite table or entry. Often forgotten is the fact that the inside entry area can do with a bit of flora just like the outside of our home. Consider filling a large urn or tall ceramic pot with plastic peanuts to take up space and keep the pot as light as possible, and then planting only the top area with a structural plant and add a cascading plant. You can add an annual for some color but it probably won't last too long indoors. This concept can be used inside or outside, but use plants that will adapt well to either location respectively, creating interest inside as well as outside your front door.

Remember to water your inside arrangements away from your furniture and make sure drainage is complete before you return them to their display area.

Psychology Of Colors: The Dining Room

Colors affect our minds, our physiologies, and our social interactions. The colors you choose when decorating a room can have an effect on any occasion that you hold there. The dining room is a place of delicate social situations that occurs between the most intimate of relationships. By first considering the psychological effects of the following colors, one can help to make the dining room a more relaxing place to eat and gather.

The first thing to consider when choosing a dining rooms colors, are the effects they will have on appetite. The color blue is a well known appetite suppressant. This is because there is very little blue food found in nature. The color blue isn't exactly a weight loss program; it simply causes a slight psychological change that makes people feel less hungry. Avoiding this color will help guests to better enjoy they're meals

On the contrary, orange and red can actually cause an increase in a person's appetite. The color orange is often associated with need, hunger, and a desire to be full. Red is about devouring, and increases metabolisms. Using these colors strategically could cause the perception of your cooking skill to rise. However you have to be careful with red. It causes aggression and can lead to fighting. Be restrained in your use of this color, and fall back more on orange, which produces a more elated feeling.

For a gathering room such as the dining room, earth tones can be a wonderful way to convey a sense of warmth. These colors remind people of the earth, making them feel more connected to the world and to the other people in the room. The ability of tans and browns to make us feel safe, allow us to open up more when we are surrounded by them.

The greatest advice when decorating is to stay true to you. While you can dabble with colors and try to create positive influences in others, you also want to provide the best mental environment for yourself to enjoy.

Tips For Fresh Flower Arrangements

You do not need to be an experienced florist to make excellent flower arrangements. However, there is something that you do need. I'm talking about great tips for arrangements of flowers. With the right tricks and hints, you will turn heads with your arrangements. This article will point out the most important factors that will help you create something you can be proud of. First, you need to know the kind of flowers you are using. For example, are you using fresh flowers, dried or artificial ones? For a good outcome, you have to treat three categories of flowers differently. Let us focus on fresh flowers and see how you can make the best arrangement possible.

For fresh flowers, green-water retaining foam will work well. Keep this in mind. It is also good to mention that brown stiffer foam is for the dried and artificial flowers. The other vital thing to consider is the size of arrangement. This will be determined by the size of container as well as the size of the space you are planning to use. Many flower arrangements go wrong when sizes are not proportional. When you are planning to make arrangements for your dining table, make sure you keep it reasonably low. There is nothing that turns people off more than having to peep through the arrangements to have a conversation. Again, do some measurements that will work well.

Another secret when it comes to flower arrangements is to use flowers in their different developmental stages. This is to say that you should utilize buds, mid-blooms as well as full blooms. Always keep the tall flowers at the centre to provide the much needed balance and beauty. The buds should be securely arranged at the sides. It is the varieties of colours, textures and shapes that make for great arrangements with regard to flowers and foliage. For awesome designs, play with all these factors and make sure to add the spice of variety. It is vital for you to know what to do with flowers that are open.

You should never arrange them facing forward. Examples of open flowers include roses, Gerbera, Daffodils and others. Make sure that they face different angles to your liking. When you are working with lilies for flower arrangements, it is always important to remove the stamens. This is because the pollen stains the flower. Also, the pollen can stain clothing and even furnishings. Removing the stamen will prolong the life of the flower and this is definitely a good thing. Colour also plays a huge role in creating a beautiful arrangement. The best thing is to have a colour balance. Do not concentrate one colour on one side; spread out colours to make the arrangement flow naturally.

Some people may think that having tight flower arrangements will facilitate stability. However, the best thing is to leave some generous room between the flowers. Just like in nature, the greatest displays will be calming and tight is definitely not calming. Make sure you hide foam and the way to do this is to employ good-looking pebbles and marbles. You can also use shells and layer them up attractively. Let the container sit on a waterproof surface to prevent any water disaster. There are so many other tips to talk about but with the above few, you will get your head out of the lay waters and begin to see elegance taking form in your arrangements.

How to Use Decorative Lights in Your House

Good lighting complements a beautiful house in each possible way. When you have a beautiful house, do not forget to spice it up with good lighting. Nowadays, there is a large selection of lighting to choose that will make your house look even more beautiful. When you are buying lights for your home, different accessories such as decorative light panels and a fluorescent light diffuser should also be purchased with the lights.

Now that you have purchased the decorative lights, what do you do next? Only a proper alignment of these decorative lights will give the intended look. If not done with a creative mind, they will look like an extra burden on your house. The following tips will guide you on the proper arrangement of the decorative lights so that they can serve their true purpose.

• The best and the oldest type of decorative lights are candles. Candles scattered around large areas like the hall of your house will give a nice look. Take candles of almost the same sizes and cluster them around a certain area, for example the coffee table. Candlesticks of different heights are a good option for this.

• Backlighting should be done with a little common sense. Use backlights behind some monuments or artwork. Backlights coming from behind an art piece will make it more noticeable and thus, more beautiful.

• Decorative lights such as cord lights should be used on bookshelves and racks. Cord lights are energy efficient and inexpensive. Place cord lights behind large furniture, under staircases or on the bookshelves.

• You can also put lights behind framed handicrafts. Lights placed in such a way will give a little illumination effect as the handicrafts will scatter the light and will let only some of it to pass through.

• Kinetic lights are another type of decorative lights which give quite an artistic look. This sort of lights will create shadows on the walls that seem to dance while they display many colors. Among other types of such lights are fiber optic art forms, retro-style lava lamps and rotating lights with crystal objects.

• Light and water are a very good combination. Use decorative lights with small wall fountains or table fountains to give a complete chic look. Guestrooms and halls are a good choice for this.

• When you are arranging these decorative lights, look around to see the areas that seem to be too dark or too shadowy. Wall lights or floor lights will look good here. Not only they will provide the purpose of the lights, they will also make this area look lively. Such areas may be corners of rooms or staircases.

• Lastly, you have to play with your creativity. Decorative lighting is all about elegance; therefore you should use your creative side to figure out which kind of lighting will suit which area of your house. Remember, not to stack the area with lights neither use so little light that it becomes difficult to picture things around. Just be creative and let it play the rest of the game.

Design Challenge - Attic Bedroom

Given: Little windows, dark room, bright coral flowered bedspread, two mismatched peeling brown painted tables, $300 budget. Goal: Guest bedroom

Let's go over to the paint store and look at their paint chips. Choose a white tinged paint with a few drops of coral for the walls. After that we need to find a way to work in lots more coral shades wherever space permits, the floor, the wall posters, and little decorative objects. Paint remover will take the peeling paint off the old tables. Then they can be painted a dull coral..

For the bedside tables, hopefully round, you can buy some coral velvet, make a tablecloth and drape the particle board tables you can find at Home Depot for under $30.00.

A light coral shimmery fabric would be great for the windows. It would make the most of any light at all, outside light or from lamps. We'll keep the lampshades off white, blending with the wall color.

Most important is to paint a piece of cardboard we get at the paint store with the room color. Then we take that piece of cardboard with us whenever we shop for anything for the room such as lamp shades, curtain material, or other accessories.

For window shades or venetian blinds, we'll choose off white, blending with the wall color. For the woodwork we'll do off white as well. Attics are usually dark and need all the help they can get.

With any money left over we'll buy a standing lamp, one with an up light to illuminate the ceiling. The room will feel lighter and bigger. If any other money can be allotted, try to find a bright area rug in shades of orange. A small chair next to the standing lamp and a small table would add a lot. Put one or two paperbacks plus a little ceramic bowl on the table for wrapped candies.

Any banners or posters should repeat the main colors, either exactly or shades of brown and coral. Let your imagination choose freely but have a theme such as sunsets, flowers, ancient buildings, abstracts.

A brown teddy bear will be very happy on the coral bedspread.

Decorate in Medieval Style

The medieval look, or at least adding a little medieval flair to your home is a popular way to decorate, so you should not have a problem finding plenty of options when it comes to what you can add to your home to accomplish a beautiful look.

When it comes to the kind of furniture you use in your medieval setting, you just need to remember, find something that goes with the theme. Usually medieval style is driven by one of three things - dragons, castle or fairies. Sometimes it's a combination of the three.

That means the furniture you choose should fit into a world where those things would be. If your theme is dragons, you should look for furniture that is made of leather, or even snake or alligator skin, that has a look as if it may be something you would find in a dragon's den. If you are going for the fairy theme, something made of natural pieces of wood and accented with flowers may look as if it came from the fairy's home in the forest. If you are going with the castle theme, go regal. There are plenty of reproduction stores where you can purchase pieces of furniture that look as if they came right out of the throne room of a castle.

The lighting in a room is everything. Lighting can set or ruin a scene. Keep this in mind as you decorate. If you are decorating a fairy themed medieval area you should steer towards lights with stained glass shades that can send rays of color which will give off the feel of being in a flower patch or a very colourful part of the forest. Likewise, a dragon's layer would be a little more dark and mysterious and a castle theme would have lighted accents showing off certain parts of the room, such as lights shining down on your replica thrones which not only show this to be a place of honor, but also give great light for reading when you are using the room.

Finally, dress up the space with things that take you to the time and place you are in love with. Like dragons? There is no shortage of dragon art and décor that you can choose from to make that clear. If you like castles - think swords, shields, wall art and tapestries that depict castles from around the world. If you are going with the fairy theme, not only can you use fairies to decorate, but also wall art and tapestries that depict beautiful flowered or wooded scenes where a group of fairies may be hiding.

Once you decide on a theme to your home, the possibilities are endless for how to decorate it. It may be best to start by looking around to see what is out there, then make a list of your favorite pieces, bring them to your home, and slowly add other accent pieces until the space feels complete.

Designer Floral Comforter For a Unique Bedroom

The most popular designs in bedding for bedrooms are floral designs. The charm and beauty of flower designs and patterns never go out of style. These flower designs are available in both contemporary and trendy patterns. When you search for floral comforter, you will find bedding sets in various colors and patterns. Some of the most common patters are petite flowers with veins. However, you don't have to follow the crowd. Designer flowery comfort bedding sets are quite popular and these unique pieces definitely make up a unique bedroom.

To make your guests awestruck, you have to search for designer decorative duvet sets that are currently popular. Some people feel that efflorescent patterns add a girly charm to the room. Even men's rooms can be decorated with blossoming duvet sets by choosing appropriate patterns and designs. Intricate flower designs as well as abstract sylvan work are available in floral comforter.

There are no limitations to the colors you can find in blooming pattern comfort sets. Rich and warm colors spice up your bedroom while cool and soothing colors let you relax on your bedding after tiresome work. You should choose bedroom accessories that flatter your duvets to draw the attention to your bedding mattress. Irrespective of the mood with which you enter your bedroom, the flowery patterns and designs can bring calmness to relax you at night.

Floral comforter sets in cotton are widely popular because the fabric allows more imagination to be used. Nonetheless, bedding sets with flowery designs in silk and satin cloth are also equally popular. If natural fabric is not you at all, then you can go for polyester fabric bedding sets. You can buy a whole comforter set with matching pillow covers and bed spreads, or you can use your imagination to mix and match different distinct flowery patterns to create a new designer look to your bedroom.

Great Space - Saving Ideas for the Small Bedroom

In an urban home where space is at a premium, storage space is a premium so here are some space-saving ideas for the small bedroom .

The bed, being the key piece of furniture is more effective as a high-level bed with plenty of boxes, drawers or cupboards underneath. The cupboards do not have to have doors, which need space to swing open. Instead, think cubby holes for storing books, clothes and shoes.

If you're living in a studio flat, you can still make use of the minimal space. For example, 'store' the sleeping area on top of a tiny kitchen and bathroom, leaving the main room as a living area. In any arrangement where the bedroom is raised up, or in a gallery, have open-tread, ladder-type access to the upper level, rather than a solid staircase which will create visual barrier.

The bed which folds up against the wall is another space-saving alternative. Build storage shelves on the wall above the folded-up bed and hang a blind or curtain which, when extended, will hide the entire wall.

Bunk beds which fold away are useful in a child's room. But you lose the advantage of the copious storage space which can be built in underneath a high-level bed that is a permanent structure.

Clothes storage becomes a greater issue in a confined space. Part of the solution is to be disciplined and ruthless about how many pieces you should have. Seasonal storage, where you store away winter clothes in summer and summer for winter, will help the situation if you have an attic or other place to stash away a couple of old suitcases.

If you're a naturally tidy person, consider banishing your wardrobe door which opens out. This is because it shrinks the room visually. Alternatively, remove doors which swing open conventionally and use sliding panels, folding doors or a curtain that hangs flat when closed. Maximum use of up-storage is vital and custom furniture built into the available space, is more efficient than free-standing. If your wardrobe finishes short of the ceiling consider extending it upwards to create less-used storage spaces.

Flower Shops Can Add Something Special To Every Home

Your local flower shops can make dreams come true. When you buy a new home, friends and relatives can express their delight and best wishes with housewarming gifts from your local flower shops. Decorate the new home with freshly arranged, beautiful flowers.

Avoid cheaply designed flowers from grocery stores or gas stations. Generally they sit in a refrigerator long past their prime. Wilted flowers, surrounded by dried leaves send a message, just not the one you were hoping for. Take few extra minutes to buy from local flower shops. If you are a frequent buyer of flowers from your online flower shops, they should have a list of your flowers, their order and styles of arrangement. This will make favorite flower selection very easy. Choose your arrangements according to season and different events.

In ordering flowers for someone, the process involves getting the flower shops that are closest to the customer connected to the order. The national service which is contacted via the 800 number or website finds their local affiliate nearest the recipient. The flower shop at that location then prepares and transports the flowers to the desired address.

By giving new home owners an attractive flower arrangement, real estate agents offer their own contribution to the special moment of purchasing a home. The cheap flowers might be presented in a dish, basket, or bowl. No matter how they are presented, this thoughtful gift serves not only to brighten the new home but also to symbolize the professional relationship between the home purchaser and the real estate agent.

Flowers can be selected to be coordinated with the decorating in many rooms in a new home. The formal dining room can have a formal setting in a tall vase and be placed in the center of the dining room table. Small arrangements can be placed on a side table or window sill. There are various styles of flower arrangements, suited to the varying seasons of the year. These arrangements vary in terms of flowers used and hence color, as well as related decorations. A decoration of forced bulbs done in winter indicates the onset of spring.

The Oriental Rug - A Rare Survivor

Oriental rugs are loved around the world for their beauty and high level of craftsmanship. It is known that people in the Middle East and parts of Asia were making rugs and carpets at least as far back as 2,000 B.C, and maybe as far back as 4,000 B.C. The techniques and material that they used to weave the pile seem to have been very similar to what Oriental rug weavers use today.

Few ancient and handmade products survived the industrial revolution as well as Oriental rugs and carpets did. It is an extraordinary attestation to the beauty and quality of these rugs that traditional techniques and craftsmanship have remained highly competitive.

Historical evidence suggests that rugs and carpets were imported from the East and distributed throughout Europe as far back as the 11th century. For example, old European paintings have been found to have Oriental rugs depicted in them. For a very long time, however, this luxury was reserved for royalty and very wealthy people. Very few other households were using Oriental rugs, or any rug whatsoever, before the 18th century.

In the 18th and 19th centuries many countries in Europe were making their own handmade rugs and carpets, and the import of Eastern rugs and carpets was still reserved for the wealthy. With the 20th century, however, came modern means of transportation and shipping. The export of rugs and carpets from the Orient to the West now became fairly inexpensive and Western countries could no longer compete with the high quality and low labor cost of Eastern rugs and carpets. The only way for Western countries to be successful in their local market was by increasing the narrowing price gap. Knowing they could not match the Oriental rug and carpet manufacturers in terms of quality, they focused on their strengths, which meant having machines, not people, make rugs in great numbers. Following World War II both Europe and North America saw significant development of the machine-made rug industry. As a result, handmade rugs and carpets produced in Europe or North America are extremely rare today.

With all the technological sophistication and financial resources available to Western countries, it is still the rug artisans of the Middle-East with their ancient weaving techniques and simple tools that reign supreme in the rug and carpet industry of today.

How a Good Bedroom Design Can Boost Your Confidence

Do you know that your bedroom is responsible for who
you are right now.

Your own bedroom is the place which you see last when you
go to sleep and also is the first place you see when you
wake in the morning.

These two are the times of the day when you are most
receptive to receive any messages, good or bad.

Hey, what did I say? Good or Bad. Yes, it's true, anything
you see, feel, touch, smell, listen to at this time of the
day will contribute in making your "personality", no matter
whether it works for you or not.

That's why you can make use of this fundamental reality to
unconsciously program yourself almost automatically, by
taking care of your bedroom. In short you can "design"
your bedroom as a self help tool.

The term "design" in itself has a much wider scope. Design
is not just color scheme, materials, lighting, furniture and
its arrangement in the bedroom. It includes the personality
of the person who is going to use it.

While in a bedroom, a person is more relaxed, feels more
secured and is open minded to accept more positive
messages. That's why it is necessary to understand the
personality of a person before designing his/her bedroom.

His/her likes/dislikes, moods, what motivates him/her can
affect the entire bedroom design strategy. This design strategy
includes the type of furniture to be used (iron, wood, cane
contemporary), color schemes to be used (cool, warm, composite)
types of flooring materials(tiles, carpets, wooden floors,
PVC floors), the overall theme of the bedroom(oriental,
contemporary)

That's why a good bedroom design is one which creates a
feeling of security for it's owner. Use of natural elements
such as plants/flowers can greatly add to the motivational
capacity of a bedroom space. Since plants and flowers
already have a beauty of their own, can greatly enhance the
aura of the bedroom.

A bedroom which is nothing but a full mess, is harmful for
development of a healthy mind. A room full of clutter and
unnecessary garbage gives a negative message to your
subconscious. As far as possible, office work, computers
should be avoided in a bedroom.

If there is a scarcity of space and such situation arises
all care must be taken to keep the work clean and healthy.
This requires a little effort, but payoffs are huge if done
on a regular basis.

I hope this article was informative and positive.

DIY Carpet Cleaning Methods

If you are going to clean your carpets without the help of a professional carpet cleaner, there are some things that you should know.

According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpets should be thoroughly cleaned every 12 to 18 months. This means that in order to remove deep dirt and stains, the carpet should be dry or wet-extraction shampooed. However, before this is done, to keep a carpet clean in the interim, it should be vacuumed daily.

When it's time to clean your carpet, check the label and see what the manufacturer recommends. You can rent the necessary equipment to do it yourself, but you want to make sure that you are renting the right equipment.

If you have a carpet that is made of synthetic fibers, you can choose any cleaning method recommended by the manufacturer. The cleaning solutions that you use should contain stain resistant ingredients sold for synthetic carpets. You should never use soap or any kind of detergent. There are five different cleaning methods that can be used including the Bonnet Method that is a machine similar to a floor buffer with a spinning pad that removes dirt. The Polymer Compound Method is a saturated compound of detergents and solvents that are brushed onto a rug with a machine and then vacuumed. The dry foam extraction method uses a dry foam cleaning solution that is applied to a rug using a machine with reel-type brushes and a wet vacuum. The hot water extraction method is better known as steam cleaning, which is a pressurized cleaning method, and the rotary shampoo method is similar to the Bonnet method.

If you are going to clean your carpet yourself, you will save money. Just remember to pre-vacuum the carpet to remove as much dirt as possible and use only what is recommended by the manufacturer to clean the carpet.

Multi-Purpose Rooms in Small Homes

Smallness in the past has often been equated with poverty. However people with plenty of money spend their holidays in very cramped conditions on yachts, in caravans or in tents and can enjoy themselves. In many cases it seems cosier. What is noticeable now, especially in large cities like London and New York, is the partly economic and partly fashion-driven trend to make the very most of a small room or flat. The one-room flat becomes a totally designed space with all the necessary functions slotted in by using imaginatively designed fitted furniture and fold-away systems. Inspiration for these designs has often been gained from the interiors of train sleepers, boats or even the space shuttle.

Why do some of us think we need such large houses? It can be a desire for status or somewhere to set off or store an excess of possessions. Alternatively, a large house can be used as a way of remaining aloof or private from others. Whatever the reasoning, we should remember when we are thinking of moving house that having a small, appropriately-sized home has considerable ecological benefits.

Multi-purpose rooms
Small space living necessitates using the same space for different activities, one of the most obvious ways of making the best use of space within your home. Of course most people do this anyway with certain rooms, but it was much more common in the past.

All housing started as a one-room dwelling space and this can still be seen in many parts of the world. However our rooms have become gradually more specialised along with the increased specialisation of our lives.

The following are the commonest activities that we perform in our homes:

- Sleeping
- Food storing and preparing
- Eating
- Washing our bodies
- Excreting
- Washing clothes
- Relaxing: reading, sitting
- Playing games
- Craft working or DIY
- Cleaning
- Meditating
- Growing plants
- Entertaining friends
- Office working
- Watching TV
- Playing music
- Exercising
- Writing & homework

Some opulent houses have separate rooms devoted to each of these activities, often more for show than for convenience. Each activity can even be sub-divided to spawn dressing rooms and breakfast rooms etc., but most of us combine some of the activities and fit them to the rooms we have available. However, we still often feel that to have more rooms would be an advantage. We need to balance up the seeming convenience of a separate room for each activity with the wastefulness of having expensively equipped accommodation idle for much of the time.

With all the ideas and technology available today, it is possible to achieve ingenious arrangements with fold-away beds, revolving furniture, the use of blinds, curtains, and special lighting, etc. This can be an exciting process to embark on, if you need inspiration, some magazines have sections specialising in rooms where spaces have been used to maximum effect. The treatment can seem expensive in time and money but is usually considerably less costly than a conversion or extension.

You can think which activities already occupy the same space in your home and then, by looking at the list above, which further combinations you might be able to employ in order to make space for self-sufficiency or some of your more pressing requirements. It is in the detailed design of these rooms that success depends; if you feel unsure in this area, call in a designer who can help you work out an attractive arrangement.
Space for a retreat or meditation room

One example of combining activities which does not involve extra furniture is the idea of combining a room as a meditation room or retreat. Here the idea is to choose a room in the house which you can strip of all clutter and have only things in the room which you find harmonious, simplicity is the key. I am choosing to emphasise this as it brings together the ecology of space within our homes, our physical health and psychological well-being. Some people choose the bedroom, others the bathroom or the attic. This ensures that there is at least one room in the house free from clutter which allows us to clear our mind and focus on whatever we choose, be it meditation, positive visualisations, empowering ourselves, exercise or simple relaxation.

Train Bedroom and Train Decorating Ideas

A train bedroom can be the most fun bedroom of all. If your child enjoys trains and has some model trains, you can do some train decorating and design a beloved train bedroom that he (or she) will cherish.

I know some "boys" that have kept their model train hobby as teenagers and on into adulthood. Some have elaborate semi-permanent tables with multiple tracks and realistic scenery. In fact my stepfather made a wonderful setup in his basement after he retired. It had been a lifelong dream which began as a childhood train bedroom.

I have always loved playing with trains myself. My brother got the Lionel set for Christmas when I was a kid, but he went out and played with his new sled and I spent hours playing with "his train". I still have a wooden train set my grandkids play with when they visit. It is "people powered". At Christmas I setup the special Christmas train. It scares the cats, but the kids love it and it plays Christmas music. I naturally consider train decorating part of our holiday décor. Even though I am a girl, I would have loved a train bedroom.

Any color combination can be used in a train bedroom. My favorites are the classic primary colors, blue, red, green, and yellow, which are the colors of our wooden train set with farm animals and train cars of produce. I suggest you use your boy's favorite colors and scenery in his train bedroom.

The best part of having a train bedroom is encompassing a large table that can be used to affix the tracks "semi-permanently". Many crafty dads (or moms) will make an inexpensive one out of plywood to fit nicely in the train bedroom.

When you can, it's a good idea to have enough room to move around all sides of the table, but three sides will work. I saw one ingenious design which was very cool. The train table was on hinges and dropped down from the wall. The tracks and scenery were attached; removable leg supports easily put in place; and in moments the train was all setup at the perfect height in the train bedroom.

Kids of all ages enjoy adding all the realistic trees and buildings, people and animal figures, and roads and cars, plus lots of train tracks and crossing gates. A great addition is to extend the scenery by painting the walls above the train table to match the train table décor. It can be lakes, mountains, trees, farms. Use your imagination to extend the scenery beyond the train table in the train bedroom design.

You can also find lots of cool train artwork to hang on the walls. For toddlers, Thomas and Friends are fun train toys, both large and small. Look for a striped engineer's cap to wear while playing with the trains. You might find a train lamp or train bookends to add to the theme in the train bedroom too.

A train bedroom would truly be "a dream come true" for any model train lover. While he will enjoy it anyway, you can complete the train design by adding a few train decorating touches. You can trace a train engine and caboose or tracks on contrasting felt and sew or glue them on the bedspread, pillows or drapes in the colors you have chosen for his train bedroom.

Decorating a Room

Why spend a fortune hiring an interior designer to decorate a room when you could decorate the room yourself? Decorating on your own reveals part of your personality to others, and makes your house feel like home. Decorating a room may seem like an enormous process, but it is actually easy when broken down into three steps. Firstly, design a floor plan, secondly, select and coordinate the color scheme, and thirdly, accessorize the room.

Start your decorating project by drawing a detailed floor plan of the room using a pencil and measuring tape or a ruler. Include the exact locations and measurements of any windows and doors on the plan. Next, place the pieces of furniture on the drawing that will be in the room keeping in mind the locations of the windows and doors. Make several drawings of the floor plan with the furniture arranged in alternate ways to explore the options available, and choose the layout that suits you best. Also, be sure to include proper measurements of the furniture such as the width, length, and height of any couches or chairs. These measurements will be needed if you decide to buy slip covers for the furniture when you choose a color scheme.

For many, choosing a color scheme for the room is the most difficult part of the process. Hundreds of paint colors, wall papers, floor treatments, and upholstery patterns exist on the market, all are impressive but also overwhelming. Start this step by observing the size and proportion of the room with the furniture in place, and decide the feeling you wish to create. For example, in a small space, light colors tend to create a sense of spaciousness where as dark colors may create a sense of comfort. However, if you have a large space to fill, using dark colors will create a sense of intimacy and warmth. To economize, select a color scheme that coordinates the existing floor treatment, and upholstery with the wall covering that you selected. On the market today are many inexpensive rugs that offer a flexible solution to covering a floor to accent the color scheme. Another economical option available is inexpensive furniture slip covers that are also flexible, and versatile in creating a well designed color scheme. Do not be afraid to experiment with pattern and texture variations such as a bold stripe with delicate floral print. It is this use of contrasting but coordinating colors that adds interest and detail to the room. Before moving on to accessorize the room, it is extremely important to examine the color scheme that you have selected, and be certain that you are happy with your choices.

Accessorizing the room is by far the most enjoyable part of the process. This step allows you to express your creativity and personality in the room. Use the items you already have such as collections of things like stamps or figurines. Also, buy new accessories to accent the old such as lamps, pictures, art work, and plants. Displaying private collections, for example, antiques or books create a theme that flows throughout the room, and unifies the interesting mixture of patterns and colors. Place the accessories in many variations, and choose the arrangement that creates the feeling you desire. A lot of layering with pillows and throws creates a sense of warmth and comfort while the use of minimal objectives may create an open sense. Accessories also represent a style; using items like brass and crystal lamps add a touch of elegance. Baskets, plants, and personal photos create a casual and comfortable atmosphere. Small accents such as tassels, frames, and knickknacks, add delicate details to complete the atmosphere of your desire. Remember that accessories are not permanent, and may be rearranged as many times as you like until you are content with the final décor. Do not rush the accessorizing; adding accessories overtime is often enjoyable and most effective.

When taken step by step, decorating a room can be fun and rewarding. Always begin by designing a floor plan and arranging the furniture. Then choose a color scheme that creates the desired atmosphere in the room. Finally, use your personal style to accessorize the room with collections and belongings. Decorating using these easy steps described, you can easily decorate without the financial burden of hiring a professional interior designer.

Dining Room Decor 101 - 3 Key Considerations

Dining areas vary from large formal rooms to small alcoves, and a comfortable dining room is one that meets your daily needs, as well as those of your guests. Practical furniture and proper furniture arrangement with appropriate serving space are key essentials that you can use to create a functional dining space. Add your decorative style, and you can make the most of your dining room, creating a space that is functional and aesthetically pleasing.

1. The Proper Table

Your table should accommodate the people using the area regularly, as well as potential guests. Choose a table that sets the desired tone for the room. Square tables and round tables suggest a more informal environment, as there is not a position for the head of the table. Long rectangular tables, and even oval tables, suggest more formality.

2. Furniture Arrangement and Serving Space

In arranging your dining room furniture, remember to leave sufficient space for chairs to be pushed back, as well as room to serve guests comfortably. Since dining space is often adjacent to the kitchen, arrange your furniture for convenience.

Buffets, side tables, and other furniture should be arranged based upon how you naturally use your dining area. For instance, if you store serving platters and glassware in the side table, you should consider placing your side table on the wall nearest the kitchen, for convenience.

3. Aesthetic Appeal

Making the most of your dining room involves creating a functional space and a dining area that is aesthetically pleasing. Knowing the overall style you wish to portray in your dining room allows you to display furniture and accessories that are consistent with that image. For instance, informal rooms are most often associated with warm colors, whereas cool colors suggest more formality. Displaying tablecloths, accent vases, and other accessories that are consistent with your overall theme adds to the aesthetic appeal of the room, therefore making the most of your dining room.

Add a Multi-Functional Room to Your Home

Thinking of multi-functional rooms within your domestic confines seems to be a highly pleasurable experience since one is hardly able to bond with the entire family in this contemporary and competitive world. Multi-functional rooms help one to do so.

Many decorating, home care, renovation magazines display various designs and tips that can be executed to decorate a spare room in your home that can be employed as a study room, a library, a guest rooms, a home office and a play room as well. However, many a times, many of us do not even have the opportunity to embellish and multi-use a spare room. Yet, there is nothing to be despair about, because there is a solution to it; you can create a space in your home that would serve with double duty.

One of the best ways to create a guest room is to simply purchase a sleeper sofa or a day bed that would serve as a seating sofa during daytime and a sleeping place for the guests at night. People usually think that a mattress might do the work, but then they are not as comfortable. These sleeper sofas are far more comfortable; and, should be the primary aim on the part of the host.

Another alternative to it could be the built-in-banquettes that can be laid out in the dining or the living room. However, you have to ensure the size of the banquettes that should be long and wide enough for all the guests to be easily accommodated. In order to make them more comfortable, add thick upholstery, so that the guests enjoy their stay overnight.

Coming to the increasing trend of a home office, many people face some issues regarding constructing and designing a functional home office area since it cannot be folded up when not in use. However, if you have a large closet that is spare and spacious enough, it can serve as the perfect space for a home office area. The doors can be left open during the day time so that there is plenty of space for a desk, office items, storage and other equipment.

If a large closet is not available, why not avail any corner of the room and illuminate it enough that it may serve as the perfect place for a home office area. Making use of a corner for this purpose would free you of any other hassle.

Coming to the idea of a study or a library, one always has the desire to have a private area in the house so as to relax, sit down and do the most private chores, execute interests like reading and even daydreaming. Now, you can easily get hold of a bookcase that can be placed strategically in any corner of the living room, dining room or even a bedroom with a comfortable easy chair and a good reading lamp that would help create an instant library.

All these ideas can be executed, irrespective of the fact whether you have a mansion, a cottage or even a spacious studio apartment. All you require is an organized space, some planning and a bit of creativity that would help construct and design an entire multi-functional space in your house.

Interior Design in the Bedroom - Great New Look On A Budget

Today's modern bedroom is often regarded as a multi-purpose room rather than what it was once was used for - just sleeping. These days many people have added couches and use the room as a hideaway where they can watch television, listen to music or read a good book.

Changes that you have planned for the room may well impact on its current setup and it could affect your sleeping patterns. It is therefore very important that any interior design bedroom projects should be well thought out because even something as simple as relocating a bed or changing the way the bed faces can potentially cause many sleepless nights and problems down the track.

A bedroom interior design project can be something as simple as just changing the look of what is already in the room. Similar to the work you can do in a bathroom where a new shower curtain and fresh window curtains can change the look of the room markedly. The same effect can be created with a bedroom; a new set of bed sheets and duvet cover, some new cushions and pillows and maybe some new drapes and you instantly have the makings of a total new look. Obviously these types of cosmetic changes are not major interior design bedroom projects but they can certainly help make an impact and make the room begin to look terrific without having to outlay a lot of money.

Take Care When Choosing Your Color Scheme

When you begin to plan your interior design bedroom project you may want to redecorate and change the color scheme to more hip and soft colors. Remember the primary purpose of the room is for you to enjoy good sleep and this can often be difficult if you choose vivid or bright colors as part of your decorations. Many paint manufacturers have developed massive color ranges for you to select from, often they might have up to 10 or more different shades for the same color. So head down to your local paint retailer and see what they have on offer.

If you are not really too sure as to what color scheme you should go with in your bedroom then it could be helpful to visit one of the display home villages near you for a little inspiration - this way you can check out the latest trends and see which colors are popular. Going online and browsing interior design websites may also give you the insight into what options you have available.

Don't forget that once you have short listed a few colors then it is a good idea to get small samples of each color and trial them on the bedroom walls to see if you can come up with a great scheme. Do this before you actually have to purchase the required quantities as it is never easy trying to return paint if it does not suit your room.

A simple interior design bedroom project, such as repainting and implementing a few effective cosmetic changes, can be a great way of making an impact on your home features. With a little forward planning you can make a dramatic change to the room without impacting too much on your wallet. Most people spend a great deal of time in their bedroom so just be certain that the changes you make in your bedroom are really changes you can live with - remember that your bedroom can also be your sanctuary.

A Simple Trick to Make Your Bedroom Look Bigger in Size

Dear friends, today I am going to share with you
little secret that I have experienced myself recently.

It's a simple trick which is almost every time overlooked. This
simple trick has proven to be a very comforting experience for
me.

Let's look at it from scratch. In any interior space in our home,
furniture plays a major role as far as comfort qualities are
concerned. Furniture is the first thing that we see. When we
say that a room is occupied it is primarily occupied by furniture.

A room without any furniture pieces in it is absolutely useless.
The overall volume of the furniture elements directly affects
our comfort factors in a room.

If we consider the case of bedrooms here, a double bed is the
commodity that occupies maximum space. Just imagine if we remove
the double bed from your room what will happen? the room will
start looking bigger because of the perceived volume.

Now here is a little trick you can try? Instead of using a full
sized double how about using a platform bed? A platform bed is
nothing but a bed with less height than a full sized bed.

So what's so special about it? Because of the reduction in height
the overall volume of the bed as compared to other furniture pieces
is less. Because of the less volume of the bed the bedroom is
perceived bigger in size.

In addition to using a platform bed if bright color combinations
are used such as white and yellow, a small bedroom is perceived
as a slightly bigger room.

A normal double sized bed normally measure something around
1800mm(L)X1800(W)x450mm(H). But a platform bed has a slightly
less dimensions in plan and the height is about 15" that's about
380mm above the floor level.

This creates a less volumetric furniture piece which is visually
more light in weight than a full double sized bed. Platform beds
are available in wooden as well as steel structures. Many
manufacturers specifically manufacture mattresses and other
accessories that would specifically help the easy and comfortable
use of the platform bed.

Depending upon the design/material/finishing qualities a good price
range is also available. Being light in weight it can be easily moved
and transported to any location within a room.

If you are looking for a easy and affordable way to furnish your
bedroom, then a platform bed can be a better choice that would
fit into your budget and create a better aesthetically visual
quality.

Imaginative Themes Spark Boys' Decor

Imagination is the key when creating themes for decor in a boy's bedroom. Themes that inspire a boy to see himself as a sports hero, an artist, or the champion of a fable or fantasy give hours of fun and learning.

Eye on the Ball: Home decorators will hardly ever go wrong choosing a sports theme for a boy's room. Anything with a ball in it is likely to draw a little guy's interest. Plus, the spherical shape of most balls lends itself nicely to colorful area rugs that give a room focus. If your son has a favorite team, so much the better; you can paint the room in team colors. Furniture, wallpaper and fabrics in sports themes are readily available, and you can finish off the room with accessories of the sport's equipment.

Rainbow Bright: Perhaps your son shows artistic tendencies, or maybe he just likes bright colors. Go for the gold (and blue and green and ...) by using bright colors everywhere. If the room has wall-to-wall carpeting, start by choosing a wildly colorful area rug, and take your color cues from that. Paint each shelf of a bookcase a different color corresponding to the color theme. Color up the bedroom furniture in the same way. Remember, paint is the most inexpensive way to design a room, so don't be shy about using it lavishly.

Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho: Thrilling pirate tales have been delighting little boys for generations, from "Treasure Island" to "Peter Pan" to "Pirates of the Caribbean." A pirate theme provides a basic color scheme in ocean blues. Add sailing ships and netting, and paint a porthole or two on the walls. Set out treasure boxes of all sizes, from a big trunk to use as a toy box to smaller treasure boxes for small toys, crayons and other collections. Be sure to make a couple of secret hideaways for your little pirate to store his treasures.

A Knight's Tale: Parents with a gift for art can turn their son's bedroom into a storybook castle. Paint castle walls with flying pennants on the walls, and top with a blue sky on the ceiling. The tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable will provide plenty of inspiration for this theme. You can even set up your little prince with curtains around his bed, just like your little princess.

Do the Locomotion: Grown-ups think of them as merely transportation, but youngsters see trains (and planes and automobiles) as the purveyors of wonder. You can choose a single theme or combine them for an overall transportation look. Most of these designs use bright primary colors, especially for traffic signals and railroad crossings. Some kind of transportation border around the walls works well. Beds shaped like cars, planes and trains are all available.

Ride 'em, Cowboy: The Wild West is a never-fail theme for a little boy's room, but do try to leave out the six-guns. Instead make his curtains or valances from red and blue bandannas. Look for Western-themed wallpaper or borders with cowboy hats, horses and ropes. A bedside lamp in a boot base is a wonderful touch, and he'll be snug as a ranch hand in his bunk if his very own broomstick horse peeks over the foot board at bedtime.

Wall Art - Tips For Proper Placement

Nothing can finish a room's décor like the effective use of wall art. But people are often perplexed about what to put where. Some of the most common mistakes I see are: art hung too high, size of art out of proportion with the size of the wall and art disconnected from the furniture beneath it.

Here are some tips to help ensure your wall art enhances, rather than detracts from, the overall look of your room.

1. The right height

Most people mistakenly believe that pictures should be hung at eye level. But whose eye? A 6'2" man or a 5'4" woman? A better way to gauge the correct height is by looking at how the picture relates to the furniture below it. A good rule of thumb is to hang a picture so that the bottom is 6-8 inches above a sofa back or 8-10 inches above other furniture. Higher than that and it becomes disconnected from the furniture and makes the room look out of balance.

2. The right balance

Another mistake people commonly make is hanging a small picture behind a large sofa. A picture should be one half to two thirds the width of the piece of furniture below it. If a picture is too narrow for the spot, you can flank it with two smaller pictures to fill the space.

3. Think of groupings as one picture

If you don't have a large enough piece of art to adequately fill a big space, you can use groupings of smaller pieces. The individual pictures should be framed in similar materials (metal, wood, etc.). They don't have to be identical, but they shouldn't "fight" with each other.

Before you hang your grouping, work out a pleasing arrangement on the floor. You can also cut out pieces of paper in the same shapes as your pictures and tape them on the wall with painter's tape until you are happy with the arrangement. For a cohesive look, the frames should not be more than about 3-4 inches apart.

4. Mirrors do triple duty

Mirrors not only have a functional and decorative use, but they can also become an architectural element. Placed where it will reflect a window and its view, a mirror can act almost as an additional window, increasing the amount of light in a room and making a room seem larger.

Placement of mirrors should follow the same rules of thumb as art, but make sure a mirror is high enough that people can see their reflections without having their heads cut off.

And don't lean a mirror on the mantel, as it will only reflect the ceiling.

If you follow these guidelines when hanging your art, you will see how much more cohesive and balanced your room will look.

Things To Consider For A Functional Living Room Design

Amazingly most people starting out have no idea how they would like their living room design to turn out. In fact, most people buy a home on the looks of the kitchen, and the bathroom according to popular consensus. So what does this say about living room design? It says that people are not thinking about it enough, and thus find themselves without a viable living room decorating plan at move in time.

When planning for a living room design treatment, think of the entire family's needs. If you are single, it would be an easy thing to do to think of your needs, however, most homeowners have some type of family, or roommate situation to consider. Thus, it is first necessary to look at their needs, before designing your idea of a perfect living room.

Questions to consider when developing a plan for your family living room design include use, space, and location.

Some living room design elements are basic due to the lack of use of the room. We've all seen those living room design elements with one sofa, covered in plastic that almost never gets touched. If this is your proposed use for the room, keep the design basic, and costs low. If, however, you are truly going to live, in the living room, it is important to look at the space itself before doing a final living room design.

Space can be defined as the parameters of the room in terms of length, width, and height. Most living rooms are large, sometimes the largest in the house. Therefore plan accordingly for the size of the living room when doing your living room design.

Location is another important element to think about when doing a living room design. If the room is located between two bedrooms, this might be reason not to install the surround sound that your child wants. Or if the room is located near the backyard, it may not make sense to install white carpet. Whatever the case, think carefully about the location of the living room, before performing a living room design plan.
